This is my “old” Skagen titanium & carbon fiber watch that had been sitting in a drawer with a dead battery for a couple years. It has a fresh battery now. It’s also the reason I got a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , because the case is scratched up, and tungsten is much harder than titanium.

I asked my parents for a nice watch for High School graduation and they bought me one of those, at full price, from a department store. I didn’t wear it once. Went on Amazon and bought a big gaudy Invicta for probably a third of the price.

I have a tungsten carbide ring, which is cool, the only caveat though, is that if you’re a wrencher, and smoosh your finger to the extent that they can’t get the ring off, I’ve been told they can’t cut it off with most hospital saws and you may lose the finger. Although, nearly any ring increases the chances of losing a finger for a wrencher. Thankfully, I’m currently doing only very minor wrenching.

They’re apparently pretty common nowadays? I got it because it was relatively cheap and an interesting material.

Have any watches with tritium tubes? Those are pretty neat.

another plus, other than them being stronger than gold, is they can be had cheaply. I probably have 8 or 9 wedding bands of different designs and metals that cost me no more than $15-20 from various online sources. Only downside is they can’t be sized, so the ring I actually used in the ceremony I bought 3 of, one my size and the others are a half and whole size up. I believe Tungsten Carbide is even stronger than Tungsten, but they don’t look any different.
The price of gold is incredibly stupid.

Well, you do you I suppose. I have this Skagen, a cheap Timex Weekender, and my “fancy” watch is this Citizen that syncs to the atomic clock.

I take it off when I go to the gym and I imagine I’d do the same when messing around with my car. Although I did assemble a shelving unit this weekend with the ring on. I’m living dangerously, I tell you!

Mine is tungsten carbide. I saw the really cheap ones online but ended up spending a couple hundred bucks at the jewelry store where I got my wife’s engagement and wedding rings.

LOVE Citizen eco-drive watches and the weird creepy instant change to the exact time when you pull it out of storage and give a little light. I have a few of them, but I always wear the world chrono.
Rarely wear something different like Rolex or Omega. I reaaaaalllly want a Milgauss or a Chronostop.

I believe that’s accurate even if there are websites saying that you can cut them off. I went with a cobalt ring.

I have one my wife got me from a jewelry store that was a few hundred, it’s my favorite due to the design looking similar to a moto tire. That said the quality isn’t any different IMO to the cheap ones. They all hold up to everything I put them through and I work with sandpaper and a lot of chemical.

I appreciate the real fancy watches but I also don’t see myself ever getting a watch with a 4-figure price unless I end up in a significantly different tax bracket. I kinda want something that looks vaguely like a Tag Heuer Monaco. This Citizen would do the trick if it didn’t only come in douchey colors.

The red one’s not so bad, just change the band. Or get a Festina or a Timex w/less color. I think a black band w/red stitching would look good on the Festina.

My wife bought me a $400 SK Cobalt ring because unlike tungsten carbide it can be cut off, but has similar scratch resistance. It scratches ridiculously easily. She also bought me a $20 tungsten carbide ring to wear on deployments... I’ve ground that thing into the pavement TRYING to scratch it... It’s amazing. Also, it’s said that tungsten carbide will usually shatter if crushed, so there really shouldn’t be a need to cut it off in most cases.

You can break a Tungsten or T Carbide or Cobalt ring with a pair of vise-grips. You just set the tension snug, snap close, open and repeat adding tension each time until the ring breaks. Usually only take 3-5 tries. Worst case scenario using this method is a shard goes into your finger and needs to get yanked out. So in real life, anybody, including wives and teenage kids could get the ring off of you. Your emergency contact just needs to know this method to tell the doctors. And many know about it already.

I’ve never felt it pull out an arm hair. The band didn’t seem to get dirty but when I had the battery replaced they upsold me on cleaning the band. It was much shinier after the cleaning.
